Okay guys, enough is enough. First off - the Tannerin device is what is used
in the Smile doc. (See the above posts for links to Paul's website.) This is
also the instrument used on "Live at The Roxy" and subsequent live
performances by Wilson such as "Pet Sounds Live".

Now, the original recording of GV was not on a real Theremin. Again, I think
   it was a Ondes Martinot-type device / Tannerin-type instrument but I can't
look this up right now. For certain, it was *not* a real two antenna
   Theremin. (Pitch is too accurate.)

The GV 'white-suit' video has Mike playing a Moog ribbon controller hooked
up to some sort of Moog device. In the Moog documentary, an associate of
Moog clearly remembers Steve Korthoff coming to Moog Music and asking if
this effect could be produced live. It was dubbed the Moog Stringer - but
shortly thereafter was always the Moog Ribbon Controller. This is the
instrument interface Love is playing / miming to in the video.

So - the original GV 'Theremin' is an unknown but Tanner-like box. The live
BB gigs were probably the Moog Ribbon, and the recent solo Wilson
performances are without question the newest version of the 'Tannerin".

As a footnote: While Wilson is featured in the film "Theremin - an
Electronic Odessey" - it's simply not true an actual dual-antenna Theremin
was used on the recording. If I have time, I can dig out the Keith Badman
book and find out who played the damn thing.

So, to answer the original poster - A "Tannerin" was used on the new Smile.
