If              "Department head," or as they're called in this country,       chair(man/woman/person), is not a desirable position. Most professors       shun the "honor" because it involves hours of paper-shuffling and       grievance-hearing that take away much time from research and teaching.              In the British and European system, there's only one Professor per       department. And in Britain, the degree "Ph.D." is a fairly recent       innovation, added in imitation of the American system.       --       Peter T.
