#1 on Amazon in "Music" "Pop" & "Rock"!

Who would have thought we would have a "real" Beach Boys record in 2012?

   My amazon review:

This review is from: That's Why God Made the Radio (Audio CD)

When the hoopla for the Beach Boys 50th anniversary started with a
promotional video of them re-recording "Do It Again" (a medium-sized
1968 hit), I was expecting this album to be a warmed over collection
of remakes and stuff found from digging in the vaults. Not so! Not
only did "Do It Again" not make the final cut for the album, but
every track on there is new, or at least never heard before.

While not every track is a classic, every track *is* taken seriously
like a band doing more than just going through the motions.

To my mind, the surprise standout is the bouncy "Isn't It Time"
which I would seriously like to hear on the radio. The same goes
for "The Private Life of Bill & Sue" -- the lyrics are some sort
of commentary on reality TV and as cultural comment, well, so what?,
but as music it is incredibly catchy and appealing. Also good are
"Spring Vacation", the title track, and the stunningly melancholy
"pure Brian" closer "Summer's Gone" which sounds as though it should
have trains and barking dogs at the end.. (I assume most people
reading a review for a Beach Boys album at this late date will know
   what I mean).

It's interesting how much they lyrics on this album, while ostensibly
often about boy/girl relationships can be read more as metaphors
for the inter-personal relationships in the band..

Minor nits: Neither Al nor Bruce gets a song of their own (though
Mike does) and David Marks apparently does not get to sing at all,
though his guitar is heard throughout. But those are only *minor*
nits. When the last "new" Beach Boy record was 1992's weak and
Brian-less "Summer In Paradise" and then next occasion all the band
was united for was a limp album of country remakes with the Beach
Boys actualy *backing* the Country singers and completely wasting
Carl's last sessions, then "That's Why God Made The Radio" is an
incredible coda to a spectacular American story (and if they want
to make another one, that's fine by me too!)
