Mike wanted to sell records and Brian wanted to make musical history.
Maybe Mike thought Brian could do a whole album of "Good Vibrations"
   and accomplish both results.

Theory: Mike exerted his will and when Van left the fate of the album
was sealed. In one sense Brian didn't even make a decision. Love 1,
Parks 0, Brian sidelined. We all lost.

Maybe Brian should have released it as a solo album (hey, don't forget
Caroline, No) but after Van left he couldn't even do that.

These debates about which version, the new or the old, is better,
remind me of debates about audio equipment. Some people think certain
speakers and amps sound like God speaking directly to them, and others
hear the same system and think it sounds like shit. Even when they're
playing the very same program material.

It isn't that there isn't a difference....that's clear. But why one
sounds better to one or another of us is never going to be explained by
logic. It's like trying to explain why tube equipment, though noisier
and less pure, still sounds best to many serious audiophiles. But my
main point is, neither is so dramatically better than the other. Or is
   it?

I think we're blessed to have both. It's not like we had to CHOOSE
between one and the other, once and forever. In the grand scheme of
things, you can buy two stereos, and you can listen to both versions of
Smile. Unless your wife says you only have room for one.
