Actually the UK chart week is now Sunday-Saturday, with the announcement on
the radio and online the following afternoon. Thus records are now almost
invariably released on a Monday (except for things like that Metallica album
last yearear, where they're desperate to keep the international dates
aligned). However, by convention the date used in reference books is the
Saturday after the chart is published; thus the present chart, with Smile as
a new entryat 7, is the chart dated 9th October 2004, but is based on sales
from 25th September to 2nd October. Confused? You will be...
Records were released on Fridays in the sixties, when the calculations took
longer. BTW, they usually still come out in the Republic of Ireland the
Friday before the UK release, presumably to discourage people from crossing
into Northern Ireland to buy them.
