It has to do more with the early converters       (Ana-Digital in recording and Digi-Analog in playback)       in use mostly during the early-mid eighties.              Fortunately I haven't come across too much thin or       brittle sounding CDs. And the best setup is low input voltage(source)       and high output voltage(playback).
