   I've heard this complaint a lot about first-generation(pre-   
   remaster) CDs.  It has to do more with the early converters   
   (Ana-Digital in recording and Digi-Analog in playback)   
   in use mostly during the early-mid eighties.   
      
   Fortunately I haven't come across too much thin or   
   brittle sounding CDs. And the best setup is low input voltage(source)   
   and high output voltage(playback).  It's cleaner and produces fuller   
   waveforms without as much clipping/limiting.
