   I'll argue that if Carter had done the right thing in 1979, there wouldn't have   
   been a Gulf War I in 1991 and, therefore, no 09/11 or Gulf War II.  If the US   
   had stomped the living shit out of the Iranians then, we wouldn't have had to   
   deal with all the crap that came later.  Saddam would have got the fuck out   
   Kuwait when we told him to (or, possibly not invaded at all), we wouldn't have   
   had troops stationed in the area, Bin Laden would have had sand in his vagina   
   over the troops, etc., etc., etc.   
      
   And as Nichel pointed out, the military is 100% volunteer, and it's their job   
   to put themselves in harm's way and bring the pain.  It wasn't the embassy   
   staff's job to be held captive for 444 days while their nations did nothing   
   useful to rescue them.
