I met one at a rememberance day parade in Derbyshire many years
ago. He had been wounded and taken prisoner at Monte Cassino
and as POW had been working on local farms where developed
an attachment to a local girl.

After the war he settled in Chesterfield and always attended remberance
day services wearing his beret. The other WW2 veterans there knew and
liked the man as did I. He used to get very angry about how his comrades
had been sacrificied by 'those Nazi gangsters'
