   Uh... you DO know that the MG3 is the MG42 rechambered in 7.62 and with   
   a slightly modified recoil spring to limit ROF to 1200rpm?   
      
   And that the MG3 is only just being phased out NOW, because it's too   
   expensive to get spare parts and Rheinmetall isn't making them anymore?

   Name one...   
      
   The M249 and other 5.56mm weapons have replaced the bigger 7.62mm   
   machine guns in normal squad use, and the M2 is still the best heavy   
   machinegun around. But the M60, while not bad, definitely isn't BETTER   
   than an MG3.   
      
   BTW, we were told in BT that the Americans had tried copying the MG42-   
   design during WW2, but failed - does anybody know more?
