On a Mac, all the "really critical" stuff is already installed,
configured, and ready to rock-n-roll. But there's a catch: MacOS X is a
flavor of unix, and like most unix systems, likes to run most of its
housekeeping stuff in the wee hours of the night, mainly so it happens
when nobody's around to notice the performance degradation that's likely
due to the upkeep stuff basically taking over the machine.

If the Mac is shut down/sleeping at the time the maintenance stuff is
supposed to run, it (duh...) won't run. *FOR THE MOST PART* this won't
be a problem, and can be easily fixed by making sure the machine is left
running around the clock at least a couple times a month. But it CAN
lead to certain things not being cleaned up/trimmed
down/compressed/packed away as expected, resulting in performance hits
ranging from minor to "Sweet jeezus... How did this thing get so
   slow?!?!?"

If your friend is one of those who thinks that the rig needs to be shut
down anytime it isn't actively in use, point him at a google search for
"MacJanitor" - It's a cheap (last I cared enough to bother looking, it
was freeware, but it may have gone to another business model) gizmo that
takes care of making certain the maintenance stuff that's SUPPOSED to
run at (for instance) 3 AM every day actually DOES run at least once a
day, regardless of what time that run might happen.
