Dave, I think it was Otto Kuum's men I read this about regarding first
name basis I can't remember if it was "Tigers In The Mud" or "Waffen
SS Hitlers Instrument of Terror" but I know I read it. The videos I
saw of basic training where the drill instructors were using their
regular voice explaining the training and then doing the drills they
only would say something if one would fail, it was very professional
treatment of the lowest ranks, they weren't demeaned or mocked. Do you
know of any videos online that show basic training drills showing how
   it was done?

We were told at the start that the Captain had bet a promotion on making his
company score the highest in the Basic Training final tests, three times in
a row, and we were the third. They worked our (and their own) butts off but
treated us with respect and let us out on weekends. And we gave back
everything they asked for, without complaint, especially after seeing how
   the other companies were treated.

The DIs still had to be loud to be heard clearly at the far end of the
column over the noise of boots and other nearby DIs. This is an Air Force
   explanation:

Optionally in the Army the execution part of the command could be simplified
to save the voice, like Atten - Hut or Forward - Harch, as the H sound
produces the necessary loud and brief timing signal without stressing the
   vocal cords so much.
