Wrong - pretty much all bands that engage in exstensive live
improvisation sound better live than on studio recordings.

   Grateful Dead
   Leftover Salmon
   Primus/Sausage/Frog Brigade
   Phish
   Galactic
   Allman Brothers Band
Jimi Hendryx & Band of Gypsies

We're not talking sound quality - we're talking about the quality of the
   music being played.

I'll take a monstrous 1969 "Other One" over the studio version any day.

I'll take that New Years eve 1969 "Machine Gun" over the studio
   version any day.

Then you listen to bands that aren't very good live.

No - its respecting musicians who can actually play the music, and
improvise, over studio whores who can assemble a product in the
studio - but can't actually play it.
