Oh man, I was a college freshman that fall, and the college had a
radio station, into which I quickly insinuated myself. I was the guy
who went down to the mailroom to get the records that came in, then
I'd sit in one of the studios listening to them. I remember Elvis
Costello's first album blowing me away. Devo's first album; what the
hell was this shit? The first Clash album. Talking Heads 77. The last
decent Pink Floyd album came out that year.

Aja's cover knocked me out immediately. You know, album-size
cover art was a thing of beauty in its time. (And as Shelby Lynn noted
in the NY Times the other day, you can't roll a joint on an IPod).

I was no jazz fan at 18, but this shit was amazing. I immediatly
walked a mile or so to the nearest dept. store and shoplifted it.
