   Your comments helped, but couldn't (and shouldn't?) fully clarify the   
   mistery. Actually they led to new questions:   
      
   Were the U of Alabama's sporting teams in the 70's losers?   
      
   Could Deacon refer to Joey Deacon - Tongue tied (1974) as a symbol of a   
   certain unability?   
      
   Or to getting bald - midlife crisis (although D and W are - still - very   
   hairy guys)?   
      
   Or to the leading rol in the guild of jazz-musicians, an at times seemingly   
   pointless profession in a ground-losing music-type? ("Jazz is not dead - it   
   just smells funny" - FZ) A hopeless struggle for little recognition by few   
   in a socially dead-end alley?
