   "The hardware" is a reference to the namesake of Steely Dan, a strap-on.  The   
   "double helix in the sky"   
    is, er, not to be indelicate, but semen shooting upwards when the male   
   participant of "doing it right" is lying on his back, looking at the sky, and,   
   well, you know. "Do it right" I leave for you to figure out, but I darned sure   
   can tell you what "doing    
   it" is!
