|    DC Warner Theatre show...3-6-06    |
|    08 Mar 06 16:24:00    |
From: c0f@intrex.net              This was written by my friend right after the show...              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~        Yo!               Back from the show, and it was a good one. The Warner Theatre is a       medium-sized Victorian-style theater, little more than half the size of       the Hammersmith Apollo in London, just a few blocks from the National       Mall in Washington, DC. Very ornate, gold and velvet, etc, comfortable       with no bad seats (we were 3 rows from the back corner and our view was       fine. Sound was to Steely Dan standards, naturally (Yamaha PM-5000       console, and a minimal Clair Bros. speaker array).               The band:               Guitars - Jon Herrington & Wayne Krantz        Bass - "Ready" Freddie Washington        Drums - Keith Carlock        Backing vox - Carolyn Leonhart & Cindy Mizelle        Trumpet - Michael Leonhart        Sax - new guy, didn't catch his name        Keyboards - new guy, didn't catch his name               The setlist (in more or less correct order):               Here At The Western World        The Nightfly        Green Flower Street        Morph The Cat        New Frontier        Third World Man        Home At Last        Snowbound        H-Gang        What I Do        Black Cow        The Goodbye Look        Mary, Shut The Garden Door        IGY        Pretzel Logic (encore)               Notes:               The gig was smooth and laid back. Average audience age was around       50--almost no bobbing heads, save during "The Goodbye Look". No-one had       to be told to sit down, and maybe two people danced during the encore       tune. Definitely the most sedate crowd I've ever seen at a "rock"       concert.               During "Snowbound", Wayne Krantz screwed up royally. In spite of       having the chart right in front of him, he got completely lost during       his solo, as if he didn't really know the song well and took his eyes       off the page, then just totally fucked it up! As fate would have it, it       was his longest solo break of the evening, and he barely recovered by       the last couple of measures. The audience was kind, giving him a polite       applause anyway. It pays to learn the changes!               Lighting was nice, but not overwhelming by any means, typical of a Dan       show, but a little smaller. The tour apparently travels in only 3 buses       which were parked across the street from our hotel. And, to the best of       our ability to discern, this was a sequence-free concert!               Fagen would signal the band when he was ready to end each song,       allowing extended jams only when he felt it, which mostly was just on       "The Goodbye Look" at this particular show. It's worth noting that       Krantz redeemed himself by kicking ass up and down the street on this       tune, making up a bit for the earlier "Snowbound" debacle. The crowd       really dug this jam, and after Donald commented on his "jam       professionals" or something to that effect. Killer!               My crush on Carolyn Leonhart is renewed, having watched her seductive,       graceful swaying all night. She was wearing one of her typical       halter-type tops (no belly showing, but it is winter after all).       However, her topped poofed out slightly below the breastline, and we       wondered quietly to ourselves if she might be with child, or if it was       just the cut of the garment creating that illusion. We hope she's still       a virgin. ;o)               If I'm not mistaken, Cindy Mizelle's first gigs with Steely Dan were       the two Roseland Ballroom gigs in '03, when she subbed for Carolyn,       who--along with her brother Michael--was absent for his wedding. The       two got the job done, let there be no doubt, but the girls took no       solos on this one.               I took a couple of pics, but alas...the camera in my mobile phone       sucks, and I got nothin' to show for it. Btw, Pete Fogel, known to       DanFans as the "Metal Leg" guy, was seated near the front.               Well, that's all I can think of for now. Feel free to share with       others who might be interested.               Don Z                     Don B (D unit)              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
