As always, it's silly to generalize. Good stuff, bad stuff. There's a   
   new Charlie Rich best-of on Bear Family - 3 CDs of stuff from his Sun   
   Records days. It's every bit as sublime as his final record, the   
   wonderful "Pictures and Paintings". This is very rewarding stuff.   
   Merle Haggard? Plenty to enjoy there. Johnny Cash, 'nuff said.   
   If you want to move into the present, George Strait has put out some   
   pretty great records. If you're avoiding country music because you   
   think it's all my-dog-ran-away stuff, you're missing out.   
      
   Of course, there's dreck like Rascal Flatts and Tim McGraw to balance   
   it out, but that's no different from rock chaff.
