   Religions survive because they morph from ecstatic cults into major   
   institutions of culture and state.   
      
   For a comparison, think of Communism in the Soviet Union.  The very   
   first generation under Lenin would largely have believed quite seriously   
   in this philosophy.  A few decades later, the same message would be   
   preached even though the actual system was doing anything but follow   
   Communist precepts.  The orthodox ideology of the regime was founded on   
   a certain language, on certain memes and belief systems, and this would   
   have to be constantly reinforced in order to maintain the legitimacy of   
   the system.   
      
   Religion -- very much including Christianity -- is no different.  A   
   millennium or two on from the alleged life and death of their founder,   
   Christian organisations need to continue to preach the same message in   
   order to continue to validate and legitimise their ongoing existence.
