   IMO, so-called honour killings are only connected to actual religion   
   insofar as perpetrators and defenders of this barbaric practice try to   
   use religion as an alibi to justify the slaughter of family members.   
      
   In reality, it is much more a social and cultural act than a religious   
   one. For someone to "besmirch" the honour of a family is to cause the   
   whole family a very serious harm up to and including loss of status and   
   ostracism, financial loss or even homelessness, all measures of social   
   censure which an threaten the very survival of the family unit. In this   
   context, religion is the least concern.
