Although I enjoyed "Masks of God", I consider it fair to say that this
series is characterised more by breadth than depth. Joe Campbell was
sometimes insightful, sometimes superficial, and sometimes irritating; but
if you are just starting to read about mythology, then his books are a
   good place to start.

I suggest that you continue reading to the end of "Masks" and then look in
more depth at those subjects mentioned by Campbell that most interest you.
Campbell's references will give you some pointers to further reading. The
book of his that I liked most was, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces"; worth
checking it out. You might also take a look at books by Eliade and
   Levi-Strauss.
