I've read all of the Masks of God and I thought they were ok. When I'd
finished I felt like I had an overview.

The one essential book is James Frazer, the Golden Bough. And it does
end up with some stuff on Norse mythology.

Generally I've found that most of the best books are published by
Princeton in the "Mythos" series. Jane Ellen Harrison is a particular
   favourite.
