   Ishmael was the elder son of Abraham, born of his "handmaid," Hagar.   
   When Sarah bore him a legitimate son (Jacob, IIRC), Hagar and Ishmael   
   were driven "into the wilderness."  Mohammed traced the descent of all   
   Muslims from Ishmael, and may well have put him in his heaven as an the   
   Islamic analogue of the Christian St. Peter, also human in origin.
