   Sorry, no, but I'm reminded of an episode in Hugh Lofting's child-lit   
   classic _The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle_, which was published in the   
   1920s but set in the XIX century. Lofting's snail had a glass shell that   
   could accommodate passengers, and did not eat the Doctor (or anyone else   
   IIRC).
