   It was a merciful release.

Michael Collins did not belong in the Ireland that had started to take
shape in 1922, as prefigured by the Treaty debate in the Dail in
   January 1922.

He would have been miserable if he had lived.

He wanted to die there and then, so as not to have to suffer twentieth
   century Ireland.

It's a little bit like the child star syndrome, children who achieve
all their ambitions as child stars, so that the rest of their lives
   are downhill all the way.

Michael Collins could not have coped with the mediocrity and
stagnation of early twentieth century Ireland. It would have driven
him insane. He was right to commit 'suicide by cop.'
