I lived in Santa Fe, NM for the majority of my life and have heard on numerous
occasions from different tribal members this story:

Apparently, the alignment with the US was so strong, the Crow agreed to hold a
communal and invited a lot of other tribes. This was supposed to be to discuss
peace and how to deal with the incoming US calvary. This meeting ended up
   being a trap and the
US killed a bunch of tribe members but didn't touch the crow.

I don't know how much of this is folklore, but seems to align with your
   research.
