I don’t remember the name (or online name) or tribe of the
woman I mentioned, or many others I interacted with
in the early years, other than Wayne George. But
I think it is possible to restrict date ranges on google
groups so I might do that to check her name someday.
I am not native, but I post to alt.native to try and reach
natives, and because I have begun to cover native
parallels in the Parallels in World Religions subpage
of my Salmon on the Thorns webpage and hope that
native readers will share more related stories with me
to help prove that their figures are similar to and
just as important as Jesus.
But I post only occasionally to alt.native and more
regularly to alt.religion.druid since I consider myself
to be a nondenominational neopagan and come
from a celtic culture.
My close friend Jim Fidler is 1/8 Cherokee and has
recorded a song Cherokee Chant but hasn’t yet
bothered to apply for tribal membership. He
is Christina Aguilera’s first cousin so she is
also 1/8 Cherokee.
My musician friend Sandy Scofield in BC is native.
My musician friend Liz Solo was given a native
name that means Raven by I think Mi’kmaq
in the Maritimes.
My musician friend Alan MacLeod was given the
name Raven by a Northern Alberta tribe I guess
due to his black hair, black leather, and
bagpipes playing (with Bill Bourne at the time).
But oddly enough, more than those two I
associate Raven with my Vancouver friend
Jean Laniel, who I suspect may have species
someone negotiator ability.
I live VERY close to the First Light Centre (formerly
The St. John’s Native Friendship Centre) and
do plan to visit and share my stories someday.
When I first moved to BC in September of 1985 to
attend UBC, I intended to walk out West 10th Ave.
to go to a Safeway but somehow got lost and
wandered all the way down SW Marine Drive and
found myself at the edge of the Musqueam reserve
and noted that the houses reminded me of my
home town in rural Newfoundland. But then I
saw a “No Trespassing” sign and turned around.
But then I knew I was on stolen land and I think
that contributed to a mild depression in 1986,
the year of the gathering of nations at Expo ’86.
