Never heard of candy caps, so I had to do some investigations to find
out what it was. The name was Lactarius fragilis var. rubidus, and it
turned out to be limited to grow with oak in northern California (and
Oregon, of course). The latex could be clear or somewhat milky, but
the sweet smell when drying, was significant.

I also found that it seems to be one of the most expensive mushrooms
on the market. At one site I read 90 dollars for half a pound of dried
   candy caps..
