Just to add to the complication..... I have noted Lactarius helvus in a
certain mossy spot under conifers here in Scotland (although not in the last
couple of years as it's been so dry in September time). I was overjoyed
(yes, I'm easily pleased) when I found it as I had been hunting for L.
camphoratus for some time, being a long time curry fan myself. Unfortunately
I read that L. helvus is actually slightly poisonous, but I did collect a
couple of fruiting bodies for interest sake and dried them in the hot water
cupboard. I would say that the smell was a mixture of curry, maple syrup and
coffee, and it did get stronger with time. It is quite remarkable some of
the exotic smells that certain fungi produce and it's a good way to catch
the interest of persons who may accompany you on a woodland walk but not
share the fervour some of us have for mushrooms in general!
