   RG Wasson, Persephone's Quest suggests otherwise. EW Barber, The Mummies   
   of Urumchi, reports on two temples in the Kara Kum, abandoned 4000 years   
   ago, that had bowls of opium, ephedra, and cannabis in them. So sure,   
   the Aryans had dope. There are ancient reports that the Scythians usta   
   make small tents, put hot rocks, like a sauna in them, and put hemp on   
   the hot rocks, vaporizing oils for those in the tent to breathe.   
      
   But Wasson interviewed Ugarit shamen who were *still* using A. Muscaria   
   in ritual, learning that they mixed the dried shroom with animal fats.   
   This was very enlightening in light of his knowledge of the Vedas and   
   all the Soma songs. The case Wasson presents that Soma was usually made   
   from dried Amanita & some animal fat. He also refers to the practice of   
   Soma being made from urine, which eliminates cannabis and all other   
   entheogenic sources I know of.   
      
   This urine potion also explains how the transvestite Scythian clergy   
   evolved from using a potion made from pregnant mare's piss that had so   
   much estrogen they lost their beards and developed tits. How else would   
   men have discovered this? For what reason would men be drinking urine   
   often enough to notice the effect?   
      
   Its not my cup of tea, but I havta admit that its way ahead of the self   
   castration that many men in that era were doing as part of spiritual   
   endeavors.   
      
   But as for the book at 22$, it is grossly overpriced. If someone does   
   actually achieve enlightenment from the use of Soma, then why does he   
   want so much *money*?
