I'm familiar with the scleroderma of a white mold that afflicted the
sunflower crop that I used to grow. Never was tempted to eat them. (but I
was unfamiliar with truffles, just like now)
In northen MN, do you think that the oak trees here might host truffles. I
see a lot of animal foraging at thier base, but always thought it was for
acorns, but I think I might have been mistaken.
How and when should I go about finding out if it is truffles that are at the
   trees base.

PS The local paper ran an article on a local gardener that found white
truffles in his garden, and pronounced them worthless, but I see very high
   market prices for white truffles.
Did that gardener 'miss the boat'?
