   Today I saw a new kind of mushroom in the woods. I was surprised to see   
   anything living under the snow, but I think it was alive. It was a cup   
   shape, very low cup with a flat bottom walls about an inch high. The inside   
   was a deep dark red. The outside was orange. Very, very rubbery. I thought   
   it might be part of a ball it was so rubbery so I started to pull one up and   
   it was attached to a grayish stem. I still wasn't positive it was real and   
   not some joke or plastic thing, but then I saw about five of them of various   
   sizes here and there on and under these logs that just thawed out today.   
      
   I guess they could have been left over from last fall, but I'd have thought   
   they would have rotted. These felt alive. Anyone know if mushrooms grow   
   while snow is still on the ground? or have any idea what kind of mushroom   
   this was?
