   Found this last weekend (4/30/07) in the forest, while looking for   
   morels.  It was in the forest litter, under a tulip poplar tree.  There   
   were also some conifers near by.  The volva at the base suggests   
   Amanita, but I've never seen any Amanitas this early.  The rusty orange   
   gills are strange for Amanita, in my experience.  I did not take a spore
