   The message

   from smxlong@gmail.com contains these words:

   > On my last several hunts I've experienced what I'm beginning to call
   > the "out of car" phenomenon. Here's what plays out:

   > 1. Go out, searching for species X
   > 2. Arrive at destination
   > 3. Get out of car
   > 4. Immediately find a species X
   > 5. Find absolutely nothing else

   Not experienced this.

Went out looking for parasols a week or so ago.
    1. Found half a dozen parasols
    2. Found a few dozen Russela xerampelina
    3. Found some oyster mushrooms
    4. Found a dozen or so Lactarius torminosus
    5. Found a clone of (holy) Clitocybe infundibuloformis
    6. Found an early Lepista nuda
    7. Found a bagful of Laccaria laccata
    8. Found several Merasmius oreades
    9. Found several Bovista plumbea
   10. Found a number of Russula delica
   11. Found several Fistulina hepatica
   12. Found two Boletus luridus

   > For instance, last weekend we went to the local bolete/matsutake
   > grounds. Fifty feet from the car I found a nice Grade A matsi button,
   > it wasn't even hiding. Three hours of further searching turned up
   > nothing.

It's been so wet here that I've found species a short walk away that
I've never seen in the locality - Amanita phalloides for one...

   > So we got in the car and drove uphill into chanterelle territory.
   > Walked into the woods and found a large cluster of golden
   > chanterelles. Another two hours turned up nothing.

Ah. I wish I knew of any chanterelle (girolle, properly) territory.
Chanterelles (Cantharellus infundibuloformis) would do, as would
   Craterellus cornucopioides...

   > Also there seems to be a "finding Boletus edulis when you're looking
   > for something else entirely" corollary. As soon as you start actually
   > seeking them they stop appearing, and since you start seeking them as
   > soon as you find the first one you never get more than one of them.

Ah. Round here you can look for those till you're blue in the face and
   not find any.

   > Anybody else experienced the same? Why do the fungi taunt me?

Transsubstantiation, and Sod's Law in cahoots.
