   Came upon a timber rattler while hiking today.  I was trying a new route   
   to a stand of mature pines.  I was on an unblazed side spur off the main   
   trail.  The climb was relatively steep and very rocky.  About 3 steps   
   ahead of me on a big rock at about calf height the snake was resting.   
   His head was elevated and facing the trail, easily within striking   
   distance if I hadn't seen him first and stopped.  This is the 2nd   
   rattlesnake I've come across while hiking.  I turned around and headed   
   back down toward my truck, not taking a picture so as not to disturb   
   him.  Photos capture animal spirits, and I prefer to let the snake   
   spirit remain free.
