   The author of "The Horse Whisperer" (made into the popular movie   
   starring Robert Redford), Nicholas Evans, along with his wife and some   
   of her relatives had to go on kidney dialysis after misidentifying and   
   eating a poisonous Cortinarius species (large genus including many   
   species).  He eventually got a kidney transplanted from his daughter.
