   Are you in the Southern Hemisphere or tropics?  Can't imagine any   
   puffballs this early in the Northern Hemisphere.   
      
   If you are in the northern temperate region and the puffball is small   
   growing on the wood it's probably a dessicated Lycoperdon sp.  Not a   
   tasty selection even when fresh, it nonetheless can be a source of cheap   
   thrills if you hit it with a stick to disperse the "smoke"/spores.
