   Do you mean Mozilla 1.7.12, as your UA string indicates you are using,   
   or Netscape?   
      
   I only ask because this is a Netscape group. ;-)   
      
   Anyhow, it is possible in Mozilla to compose in HTML, and send in plain   
   text. I inserted the above emoticon by using the smiley dropdown in an   
   HTML compose window.  I'll insert another.  :-D   
      
   Now, before I send, I click Options>>Format, and choose Plain Text   
   only.  I will now send, and lets see what arrives in the group.
