Firefox will have no impact on your Netscape installation, they are
completely separate programs, with completely separate profiles. At
most, Firefox will offer to transfer bookmarks and other settings from
Netscape. Once thats done, they have no interaction.

I have both Netscape 7.2 and Firefox 1.5b on my system currently, with
no problems. For that matter I also have Netscape 8.0.4.

I suspect something else caused your problem. The Firefox installation
   was just a coincidence.
