Your suggestion worked, although somewhat in reverse! Under       Typeface / Monospace, I greatly *increased* the number of pixels, and       arrived at a good size for the messages. I had thought that section was       intended for viewing and creating web pages as stated in the Help screen:              "Monospace: Select a monospace font (like Courier) and size you want to       use for web pages."              But indeed it definitely applies to viewing mail and newsgroups, and my       eyes can now uncross and relax.
