|    Disappearing newsgroups    |

From: john@heatons.fsnet.co.uk              Netscape 4.6, Windows 98SE: Following a strange crash yesterday I found that       my newsgroups kept disappearing. If I resubscribed they appeared in the list       in the state that they'd been left in and I could use them but when I closed       down and then reopened they'd gone. If I used an old profile which I knew       was previously working the problem remained.              Today I don't even get the line in the "Name" window which gives the address       of my news server and Netscape won't allow me to specify a news server in       the edit/preferences/newsgroup servers window (that is, it lets me try but       after typing the address it is totally ignored). If I create a new profile I       have to start each newsgroup from scratch, which is tedious when there are       60,000 messages in each to deal with.              If I create a new profile it seems to work OK but the odd thing is that my       original profile will now also use and apparently remember the newsgroups of       the new profile. If I subscribe in one profile it also appears in the       other(s).              I have done much uninstalling and reinstalling of Netscape but the problem       is gradually getting worse.              What I want to know is does anyone have any experience of similar problems.       There must be a file somewhere which holds relevant newsgroup and server       information which probably became corrupt yesterday after Windows crashed       whilst I was using newsgroups. Which file is it? What might I have manually       to delete in order that a reinstallation replaces any duff files?              JEH.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
