PC-Cillin antivirus used to do something like this to me.
PC-Cillin modified the Netscape "prefs.js" email settings
to route email through PC-Cillin so it could be virus scanned,
but I believe it changed a setting which it should not have.

Uninstall/reinstall would not fix. Uninstall/reinstall only
reinstalled the program, it did not restore the "prefs.js"
settings which the antivirus had changed.
