   Under Preferences/Advanced/Software Installation, there was a tick mark   
   in Check for Updates, weekly, box. I'm not sure that the box was checked   
   in the original installation. Anyway, instead of merely alerting me that   
   a newer version was available, Mozilla installed it, much to my dismay.   
   Now I'm still stuck with the problem of the missing mail.
