   When your modem starts up, it communicates with the server. It gets the   
   address from the server (the ip) and does some handshaking with the   
   server to set the transfer rate and protocols. While these will be   
   adjusted later, there is an initial setting that both your modem and the   
   server have to know.   
      
      
   Nothing private is passed at this point in time.   
   When a webpage is requested then some information from Netscape is   
   provided. Such as compatability information (version) and whether SSL or   
   other security protocols are available. Again, even then, nothing   
   private is passed.
