I use Thunderbird for reading Usenet and it works fairly well. The one
caveat is that there's no killfile capability, at least not that I am
   aware of.

But it's important for this discussion to keep in mind, and to remind
users, that there are two pieces to the puzzle. One is selecting a
newsreader. The other is choosing a news server to connect to.

Most of the news servers have a cost associated. Free options are few.
The most well known free one is eternal-september, which I use.
However, the signup process has recently become more complex with user
authorization being required. I don't remember exactly what I did to
get set up with it this time around, but it wasn't simple.

I notice, by the way, that the problem with eternal-september dropping
   posts seems to have abated.
