   1944--thirteen days before the Saturday, December 16th onset of Hitler's final   
   (and ultimately futile, thank Zeus) offensive, now known to posterity as The   
   Battle of the Bulge.     
   (The entire text of the American commander's ultra-succinct courageous refusal   
   (on Thursday, December 21st) to surrender his Wehrmacht-surrounded divisions   
   has gone down down in history as probably the most famous single-word quote of
