   Well,he had Ryzhkov serve as a senator for the last 20 years,so I don't   
   think he saw him as a threat...in 1985,when Ryzhkov became Premier,   
   Gorbachev had just become General Secretary and Gromyko President of   
   the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet,while Putin was a minor KGB field   
   officer.   
      
   Un terms of military desperation,I was wondering if the draft for   
   service in Ukraine would ever be extended to men of Ryzhkov's age   
   (he represented an oblast adjacent to Ukraine) but I suppose that   
   by dying he has dodged this.
