   Nguyen Phu Trong (mostly not related to the innumerable other Vietnamese   
   with the family name Nguyen),born April 14th 1944,general secretary   
   of the Vietnamese Communist Party since 2011,died July 19th 2024 according   
   to Vietnamese and other sources.   
      
   He was also head of state from 2018 to 2021,but his party leadership   
   was what made him the most powerful leader of Vietnam.   
      
   He was the first party leader to die in office since Le Duan in 1986,   
   as Truong Chinh,who had preceded Le Duan as Ho Chi Minh's number two   
   and then became Le Duan's number two,chose to retire at the party   
   congress after filling Le Duan's unexpired term,and as head of state   
   the following year (Ho Chi Minh,in North Vietnam,and Truong Chinh   
   and Nguyen Phu Trong,in unified Vietnam,are the only men to have   
   headed state and party at the same time).Nguyen Van Linh,Do Muoi,   
   and Le Kha Phieu all retired after terms shorter than Nguyen Phu   
   Trong's,and then died afterward,while Nong Duc Manh,who served from   
   2001 until being succeeded by Nguyen Phu Trong and is rumored to   
   be Ho Chi Minh's illegitimate son,is still alive.   
      
   Nguyen Phu Trong had suffered from health problems for years,   
   but remained in office while rivals either retired willingly or   
   were forced to resign.Apparently To Lam,his third successor as   
   president after the first two stepped down amid corruption   
   scandals,is now taking the reins of the party.
