I should mention that when he sold Cooper Automotive
(which had been pieced together from the auto-parts businesses
McGraw-Edison had retained from its predecessor Studebaker-Packard
with the acquisitions of Champion Spark Plug and Moog Automotive)
to Federal Mogul,Cooper Industries received 48% of the stock of
Federal-Mogul but agreed to essentially have no say in the
direction of F-M by committing to always vote its shares in
the same proportions as chosen by the owners of the other 52%.
Soon after that deal Federal-Mogul made other acquisitions with
enormous asbestos liabilities and plunged into bankruptcy.
