   Alfred's the first name...his LAST name kept changing.

   Alfred originally introduced himself as the son of a butler   
   known as "Jarvis",and butlers/valets are usually known by their   
   surnames,viz. the equally fictional (Reginald) Jeeves and   
   (Mervyn) Bunter of Wodehouse and Sayers.   
   Thus,he was implicitly Alfred JARVIS.   
      
   Not long after that some writer who didn't understand this   
   named him Alfred BEAGLE.   
      
   Decades after that,incidentally after the TV show was cancelled,   
   some other slouch decided he was Alfred PENNYWORTH.
