   Stateaffairs.com and the Nashville Tennessean report the   
   death of former United States Senator James Ralph (Jim)   
   Sasser on September 10th 2024,twenty days short of his   
   88th birthday.   
      
   He was elected to the Senate in 1976 defeating Republican   
   Bill Brock,who had defeated Albert Gore Sr. in 1970 in a   
   campaign Sasser had managed;Brock's grandfather had served   
   as a Democratic Senator in 1929-31 before going into the   
   candy business,being succeeded by Cordell Hull in the seat   
   later held by Albert Gore Jr.   
      
   In 1994,Sasser,as a committee chair and likely next party   
   leader,was upset by Bill Frist,later Republican leader;   
   President Clinton appointed Sasser ambassador to the People's   
   Republic of China.
